Neither guitar training nor freakishness was a prerequisite for playing Guitar Freaks, but many Japanese arcade goers were shy about playing air guitar in public, and opted instead to drive trains or put out simulated fires. The PlayStation version of the popular title rewards their reticence with two modes unavailable in the coin-op original: Free and Training Modes. The game interface remains the same, with indicators flowing down the graphic representation of the neck, divided into Red, Green and Blue Lanes.
The player concentrates on the agreeably simpler task of pushing buttons that correspond to the indicated lane while 'strumming' with the Pick button. The Training Mode works players through lessons consisting of short riffs, allowing them to familiarize themselves with the concept of a guitar in which both the chords and the pick are represented by buttons. In the Free Mode, players may select a track to practice on, adjusting the speed and indicator presence according to their preferences. Once past the trainee stage, players may thrum and shriek their way up from Easy to Normal to Expert level, mastering such techniques as wailing, use of effects, and original track editing.
Correctly interpreting the flowing musical indicators and staying on the beat results in a running 'Good' and 'Cool' feedbacks, while missed buttons, uneven playing and general awkwardness will earn the player a 'Bad' judgement and a steadily declining 'Excite Gauge'. Once the gauge runs out, the game is over; managing to complete the song boots the player into the next stage.
The Beatmania Controller doubles as an effects controller in this game, and original music data can be saved to the Memory Card. Compatible with the Konami Guitar Freaks controller. GuitarFreaks is played using a controller designed to imitate the shape of an electric guitar, most like the Fender Jazzmaster or Fender Mustang. The neck houses three buttons, colored red, green, and blue. On the main face of the guitar, a pick lever is used to simulate the picking and strumming of an actual guitar. A small metal knob near the pick is used to alter the sound produced by the game, such as adding Chorus/Delay effects.
