There’s only one place to host one of the biggest video games trades shows on the planet, and that’s Japan, the heart of the gaming industry. The Tokyo Game Show is coming to Chiba, Chiba Prefecture this September. The annual event is the most anticipated gaming convention in Japan, with powerhouse companies Sony and Nintendo both bringing their best toys to show off.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Tokyo Games Show, making this year a special milestone for one of the longest running cons around. Last year over 270,000 people showed up to the event, and this year organizers say they expect around 230,000. The convention has been called the “E3 of Japan” because just like E3, everyone participating brings their A-game.

The first two days are just for industry professionals, but the last two are open to the public. One of the defining features of the Game Show is Sense of Wonder Night (SOWN), where developers share their unique ideas and concepts. SOWN is designed to find the ideas that provide the greatest sense of wonder. This year, there are 10 presenters for SOWN 2016. There are awards for the “Best Technological Game Award,” “Best Arts Award,” “Best Game Design Award,” and many others.

The convention will also be presenting the winners of the Japan Game Awards 2016, in the “Games of the Year” division. Con goers will get to vote in the Future Games and the Amateur Games categories. The Tokyo Games Show is known for the incredible cosplayers who flock there every year.

This is the venue where the best cosplayers in the country go to show off their stuff. If you decide to dress up, you better like cameras because the convention also draws in both professional and amateur cosplay photographers from all over the globe. And of course, it wouldn’t be a games show without the chance to play video games! There will be more games than you could possibly play set up for the attendees. Sony and Nintendo will be breaking out their latest hardware, so go ahead and give it a whirl. For people in the E-sports scene, the E-sports area is the place to be – there will be competitions all day for a huge selection of competitive games.

There’s going to be special sections and areas just for VR games and tech, indie games and developers, romance and dating sim games, and a brand new one this year just for AI tech and hardware. The Tokyo Games Show is an epic and crazy event, and it can be a little overwhelming for first timers, so if you go, just try and plan out the things you want to see and do most, and remember there are plenty of places to go and take a little breather if you need one.
